2010 is definitely a more optimistic story than 2001.Īs for the Russians, I don’t think you need to be worried about a typical Cold War plot. Also that’s definitely not to say 2010 answers all the questions from the first book. 2001 did ambiguity really well but I thought 2010 did less ambiguity quite well. It does give some answers to the greater purpose of the monoliths and what not, and there will always be something lost when questions are answered, but I actually found it to have a very satisfying conclusion and enjoyed the “answers” to the questions. Am I going to be pampered by more striking psychedelic descriptions? It feels that I need to rewatch the movie, so I can rinse this perspective out of my head, for otherwise it will hunt me. Moreso, the encounter with the monolith on Iapetus is just beautifully written. There's a keener sense of time and distance and a more intimate portrait of Dave, which allowed me to feel a connection I didn't get from the movie. In and of itself, I don't care so much if they travelled to Jupiter or Saturn, but the lengthened journey of the novel shows how wrenchingly solitary the voyage becomes once Dave is all alone. Those get tedious after a while.Īnother minor issue is that I'm unsure as how to feel about it being a continuation of the movie. + hearing what the author had in mind first hand is always good.Īs for my second apprehension, I'm worried that I'll be stuck with some stereotypical Cold War subplot. Yet, at the same time, I realize that not reading the sequels would leave me out of some fun discussions. I worry that a more conventional ending would be underwhelming in comparison. The ending both movie and book already provide is extremely satisfactory, despite its ambiguity. My understanding is that the sequels offer answers and somehow involve the Russians and the Chinese.
